New research by anesthesiologists shows that using propofol may aid doctors in combatting this trend by helping them find hard-to-spot, potentially cancerous serrated polyps during colonoscopies.
Using propofol during colonoscopy results in deeper sedation than moderate sedation – which might make it easier for doctors to do a thorough exam. Because they are flatter than other polyps and blend into the folds of the colon tissue, serrated polyps can be missed during a colonoscopy. The analysis included more than 54,000 colonoscopies in patients over 50 and found that propofol use was associated with improved detection of these elusive polyps.
